Way back at the
outset of the 2010 Major League Baseball season the Toronto Blue
Jays were actually in first place. Aside from the home opener
sell-out, that was earning them barely over 10,000 bums in the
seats. Now that the birds are firm holders of fourth place,
people are actually coming out to see them. Enthusiastic
crowds in the twenty and thirty thousands have been showing up at
Rogers Centre since the all-star break.
I have a theory.
Canadians love being the underdog. ...

The Jays’ big test of August is underway.
Still over 500, Toronto matches up against the elite of its own
division in six series during the month – two each against New
York, Boston and Tampa. Will August prove to be awesome and
amazing or awful and awkward?
Over this past week the Blue...

Toronto’s Blue
birds just finished one of their most “feel good” weeks of the
year. Playing those O’s of Baltimore is doing that for them
this year. Twelve games against each other and twelve wins
for the Jays. They split in ’09.
The...

So a few weeks
back, I’m complaining out loud to my wife Debbie, as she does her
polite best to pretend she cares, about Blue Jay closer Kevin
Gregg. Well, actually it was more about how some managers
manage their closer. “Why is it that a pitcher having a bad
outing in the sixth or seventh inning is yanked immediately in
favour...

 I’m always trying
to figure out averages and who and what’s “due”. I usually
cringe when the coach walks a hitter who’s three for three, to face
a good one who’s having a hitless day, because I figure that just
means he’s “due”.
So when my son and I were heading to
the Rogers Centre on...

Hey, they don’t
call it “the show” for nothing! To a “pure baseball fan”, a
well played game can be entertaining no matter the outcome of the
score for your “favourite” club. To a pure team fan, a loss
will just ruin your day.
As a Jays fan, when they get to a
stage where...

The dark cloud
hanging over the Toronto Blue Jays, that was the month of June, is
so opaque as to make a search for any silver linings futile.
How does a club go from one of the
best offensive teams in the Majors, to the absolute worst?
Yes it happens regularly on...

First thing we
have to take care of is the answers to last week’s questions:
Q: Will Jose Bautista climb
out of his slump?
A: Well – he had a two homer game and was the first in the
Majors to reach 20. He also had a 3 walk game and another hit
or so in...

I can still
remember well the last time baseball’s biggest honour was bestowed
upon the Toronto Blue Jays. In the time since, a whole
generation of young adults has sprung from the smiles between
loving couples.
What I can’t remember, is how many
forgettable...
