WTF, OED, WTF
by Mike Gentilucci
So the Oxford English Dictionary released its 2011 additions, and Phelpsian is once again not on the list (Slurve has a history with the OED). And neither is WTF. To which I have to say WTF, since OMG, LOL and the heart symbol all made it FYI (that made it too).

I'm also giving a WTF to the Washington Post for claiming that WTF was a new entry.  And not even as what you would think they'd put it in there for, but as Win the Future.  You know, the linguistic trick Obama pulled with Bush's Every Child Left Behind to make it seem like our public education system isn't still in a state of complete disrepair.  At first I didn't get it, but then my Sr. Sophistication Expert explained to me that it was just a bad joke.  A bad joke that caused me to go to the OED website and see if it was on the list because no one else was mentioning it.

Of course I need to thank Alex Petri for providing the impetus to send me to the OED site because there were definitely some other entries worth talking about, but first I want to share a comment on the post article that was titled "Stop it Oxford English Dictionary. OMG? LOL? Heart? No!"
aproschi: You complete[ly] misunderstand the point of the OED. The OED is a record of English usage, NOT a prescriptive volume of how language should be used. It is not a "watchdog of language." There are thousands of words that were the "lol" equivalents of their time in the OED, and thank god they are in there, because if I'm reading novel from the 18th century I'll find it. Even if that word hasn't been used since 1799. At some point in the future, a scholar or schoolchild may need to know what "lol" or "omg" mean. *That* is the point of the OED.
So not only did she misinform people, but she totally got schooled. Bravo sir or madam. Consider this an open invitation to write for Slurve.

Okay, this is no time for smack-talk (new entry), and I don't want to be a party-crasher (new entry), but in a world of fabless (new entry) ego-surfing (new entry) it is becoming harder and harder to engage in rumour control (new entry).  So let's all look at hentai (win for the Japanese) and go on rumspringa (win for the Amish).

In any case, WTF should totally be in the OED, but there's one word I'd like to see in there even more: slurveworthy.

***

I just googled WTF looking for an image.  WTF FTW.  Definitely slurveworthy.
